A slight departure from the normal posts as I am going to introduce you to a nice Alexa Skill that I use a lot. It is called My Media. If like me you have a large CD collection it’s not always easy to quickly find the album you want and play it. We all crave immediate access to the music we own. This Alexa skill is for you.

Getting Started

First off you naturally need an Amazon Alexa, the cheaper Echo Dot will suffice. Pair this with a Bluetooth speaker or connect it to your amplifier and you are ready to go. You will need to enable the My Media skill within the Alexa app first of all. Next head on over to the My Media website: https://www.mymediaalexa.com and download the server to your computer. This little program sits on your PC or Mac and monitors folders where your music is stored. You can then call up the album or track of choice simply by saying ‘Alexa, ask my media to play the album <album name>’. It also responds to genre type – ‘Alexa, ask my media to play some classical music’.

Music Everywhere with Alexa

If you own a NAS a which supports a Virtual Machine, just install the skill on that Virtual Machine. This will then allow Alexa to access all the music you have stored on your NAS without having the need for your computer to be on. What’s more, you can then play different albums and tracks on each Alexa unit you have in the house. The My Media skill supports most popular music formats. There is support for MP3 and M4A music files straight out of the box. You can optionally enable support for WAV, FLAC, OGG and WMA but most download an extra item. The instructions to do this are very easy to follow and should take you less than 5 minutes to get up and running.

The cost to run the app is as a mere £3.62* for a whole year and provides a license to run a single media server. That is less than £0.01* a day!!! (*Currency conversion at the time of publishing)

Tech Support

The support is also top notch. I had a number of albums labelled from Booster 1 through to 7, which confused the skill. However, a quick e-mail to the support guys and they gave me a fix within 24-hours. I have reached out to them a few times now. On each occasion, they were pleasant, helpful and responsive to ideas.

If you haven’t guessed by now I really like this skill and thoroughly recommend it. So go and check it out.
